Pescadero Creek Park is a San Mateo County Park that is part of a complex of parks run by county and state authorities. This park either abuts or interconnects via trails with Memorial County Park, Sam McDonald County Park, Portola Redwood State Park, and even Big Basin Redwood State Park (although that trail has been closed temporarily due to timber operations). The entire complex comprises 8,020 acres of public land! There are not that many access points for driving to trail heads, which makes me think that this park caters more to equestrians than to hikers; however, there are two nice loops that you can access from the Tarwater Trailhead parking lot. The park shows the remnants of both an old dairy farm (photo above) and a shingle mill. There is also a seriously fabulous old growth redwood along this trail, and the park is quiet enough that you are likely to see deer.

This is a flat, easy hike between two parks: Huddart County Park and Teague Hill Open Space Preserve. The trail continues through Bear Gulch Watershed to Wunderlich County Park (total distance, 5 miles one way). I didn't have time to hike that far though, so I will have to try out Wunderlich another time.
This park is pretty tiny compared to some of the other MSROD preserves, but it features a lot of maples, so it's a fun place to walk in the fall. It's also dog friendly!
A really cool 3.5-mile hike that features a sandstone outcropping with delicate lace-like erosion patterns called tafoni.
An 8.4-mile hike, descending deep into one of the most spectacular of the MSROD open space preserves.
I really enjoyed this 7-mile hike, which is managed by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space Trust. I think that the route I took could be adjusted to accommodate someone who prefers flat hikes. As it is, the hike I took had some significant elevation gains--but that allowed for gorgeous views of the Pacific!
I have made my husband go on some of my favorite hikes with me, hoping that he will catch the bug. The flat, 5-mile hike on the top of Windy Hill Open Space Preserve was one of his favorites that he's tried so far!
Año Nuevo State Park is about half way between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz off of Highway 1. The part of the park that is the most interesting is definitely the nature preserve that features the elephant seal sanctuary, where you can see elephant seals year-round.
