Sunol Regional Wilderness in the East Bay is a lovely wilderness area. Here is a blurb on the park website:
Bedrock mortars used by Native Americans for pounding acorns that were found in the area are reminders of Sunol's first inhabitants. For the past century, however, the land known today as Sunol Regional Wilderness was used almost exclusively as ranch land. Under the East Bay Regional Park District's multi-use land management policy, cattle continue to graze in the 6,859-acre wilderness. We definitely saw lots and lots of cows grazing on our 5.4-mile loop!

This 3.4-mile in-and-out hike to Sempervirens Falls is a great hike to do at the main campus of Big Basin Redwood State Park. It's a much easier waterfall hike than the long loop I did on my last visit, which visits Berry Falls, Silver Falls, and the Golden Cascade. I went on a very rainy day, and I was able to hike along the roads to keep my feet dry when the trails got inundated with rain water. I actually recommend a rainy-day visit to Big Basin. The greens of the trees really pop when it's wet, and the fog that rolls in with the rain lends an unearthly beauty to the park. Moreover, it's way less crowded on rainy days, which only augments that otherworldy feeling.
Lands End is one of the many lovely parks that is incorporated into Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This national park is broken into smaller campuses that are all over the San Francisco Peninsula and Marin County. This out-and-back hike is about 3 miles (~1.5 miles each direction). You can start from the Lands End Parking lot (680 Point Lobos Ave, San Francisco, CA 94121). Jane Huber, the author of the blog Bay Area Hiker, has a really nice write-up of the hike here, and the department of tourism has a gorgeous photo spread here, along with some information about the nearby historic site of the Sutro Baths ruins. See a map and some more photos after the jump.
