The Lawrence Hall of Science is a science museum that is affiliated with UC Berkeley. It's in the hills above the main part of the campus, near the Tilden Park. Before school started up again, my daughter and I made it here one week-day for a morning outing.

California Academy of Sciences at Golden Gate Park

The California Academy of Sciences consists of multiple science museums blended into one interesting building. Inside you will find a biosphere of a rain forest ecosystem, a fantastic aquarium, a planetarium, and a natural history museum. All of these different types of museums blend really beautifully into one whole, and the museum itself is topped off with a "living roof." The Academy is located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, which is one of my favorite things about the city of San Francisco. Click "read more" to see photos of our visit.

Chabot Space and Science Center is a really nice space museum in Oakland that sits right where Redwood Regional Park, Roberts Redwood Regional Park, and Joaquin Miller Park converge along Skyline Blvd. We went this past Sunday to check it out with some friends, and we really enjoyed it!

Ardenwood in Summer

Ardenwood Historic Farm has become one of my family's absolute favorite activities for the weekend. It seems like most people associate this fantastic EBRPD park with its fall Harvest Festival, so it tends to be less crowded than Tilden's Little Farm. We had another lovely adventure this Saturday: we toured the Patterson House for the first time.

Alviso Adobe Return

The last time I was at Alviso Adobe Community Park was when I was with my dad, who took some lovely photos of a striking sycamore tree in the large field across from the adobe house. This time, I actually went into the park itself to see the historic building, an adobe built in 1854 during California's Spanish-Mexican Rancho Era. This is one of the few remaining adobe houses in the Bay Area.

Today was my daughter's birthday, and she loves trains. So to celebrate, I took her to the California State Railroad Museum which is part of the Old Sacramento State Historic Park. I had been here before--my husband and I used to live in Sacramento--but this was her first visit, and it was a HUGE success! Choo choo!

So this was not a hike, but--boy!--was it a great experience for this not-so-lonely hiker and her hiker-in-training. We went to the Lindsay Wildlife Experience (formerly the Lindsay Wildlife Museum), which abuts an amazing city park in Walnut Creek, Larkey Park. Between the museum, the playground, and the swim park, this is just a dream for any family of young children in the East Bay.
