Prairie Falcon-Blue Oak Loop

This 4-mile loop was a longer extension of the easy 2.8-mile loop that I did last September at Morgan Territory. The trail is really peaceful and beautiful, and it was so nice to extend that route into something a little longer!

Hayward Regional Shoreline

Hayward Regional Shoreline is much, much nicer than I assumed it would from driving past it on the San Mateo Bridge. I had seen the Hayward Shoreline Interpretative Center, and I assumed that this was the only way to reach the park. The center itself looks nice enough, but the trails would almost certainly be noisy due to the traffic from the freeway. It turns out that there are actually three entrances to the park. I took the one on West Winton Avenue, and it was really beautiful--no traffic noise at all, but just lots of gorgeous marsh grasses and shorebirds in Cogswell Marsh.

Autumn colors at Caswell Memorial State Park

11/12/2019

Picture
Caswell Memorial State Park, in Ripon, CA, is pretty magical in autumn. It is an example of riparian oak woodland, which once flourished throughout California's Central Valley. This ecosystem is threatened and still declining, so this forest really feels special. The oak trees are majestic (no matter the time of the year), and there is a wild grape vine that runs rampant in the park; the leaves of the grape vine turn yellow and red in the fall, which really adds to the golden feeling of the forest.

Autumn at Pinnacles

Another trip to one of my favorite parks in Northern California: Pinnacles National Park! This trip, I brought my brother and we took the same route that I took with my dad and my husband in March through the Bear Gulch Talus Caves. It is fun to compare and contrast the same hike at two different times of the year. The water was more impressive in March, but the light was just golden in early November. I recommend going at both times of the year.
