This 4-mile loop was a longer extension of the easy 2.8-mile loop that I did last September at Morgan Territory. The trail is really peaceful and beautiful, and it was so nice to extend that route into something a little longer!
After carving out a series of holes in the trees, often along lines that make for beautiful patterns, woodpeckers stick acorns in them, making a bank of acorns for later. It was really cool to see this in action--something that I totally did not see on my late summer hike.
I already have plans for two return visits to Morgan Territory. I want to further extend this hike, taking the Volvon Trail all the way through its loop around Bob Walker Ridge. It looks like route would be a little over 6 miles and not too steep. A second, more involved, hike that I am planning is from the trailhead off of Finley Road. The Black Hills-Sulphur Springs Loop is about 7.2 miles and it looks to include some more serious elevation change in the hike. It will be cool to see a totally different part of the park!
