We passed through Tuolumne Meadows three times on our camping trip to the Eastern Sierras, and each visit offered us something new. When you enter Yosemite National Park, ask the ranger for information on Tuolumne Meadows, or download their pdf map here. If you are doing more substantial hiking, then you will definitely want to purchase a better map before you go. This was a wonderful new experience for us; previously, we had really restricted ourselves to Yosemite Valley. We really enjoyed trying out this new area of the park!

Butano State Park is a one of my favorite parks. I have been on Butano streak, as you will see after the jump!
This 14-16 mile hike (one way) passed from Pogonip Park (map) in Santa Cruz, through UC Santa Cruz and possibly parts of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, into Wilder Ranch State Park through to the sea. It was a beautiful hike that went through chaparral, riparian, dense redwood, and open grassy hills that winded down to the Pacific.
This 10-11 mile loop is an outstanding hike for a winter's day where you will see some spectacular waterfalls amidst beautiful, old-growth redwoods.
This 13-mile hike is the crown jewel of Portola Redwood State Park. I have written about this park before, but I wasn't up for such a long hike at that time. I did not realize how much this gem of a park has to offer!
This was a return visit to the lovely Butano State Park--I wrote about my previous trip here. I went back to do a longer loop this time, and it offered a gorgeous new view of the park. I would highly recommend this 10-mile hike if you're up for some steeper climbs.
This 12-mile hike, deep into the sprawling Pescadero Creek County Park, offered me lots of solitude and some close encounters with the California Newt.
This 10-mile loop winds its way across both sides of Skyline Highway, offering breath-taking views of Santa Cruz mountains from the Long Ridge side and a densely forested hike on the Upper Stevens Creek side. The latter descends past Table Mountain to a beautiful canyon and offers glimpses of the East Bay’s Diablo Range.
