I hiked the northernmost part of this segment of Crystal Springs with two other mothers who have very young children. Because the trail is paved, it is perfect for people who use strollers. We didn't make as far as I would have liked, but we had a lot of fun nonetheless.

This is a repeat hike from one I did last year at Edgewood. Late March is such a great time to visit this wonderful park! I saw Miner's Lettuce, buttercups, lupine, Indian warrior, blue-eyed grass, hounds tongue, shooting star, oxalis, spring vetch and more. Read more to see photos of all of the gorgeous spring flowers.
San Pedro Valley County Park in Pacific is an excellent park to visit on a clear winter day, especially after there's been significant rain. The trail I took boasts a multi-tiered waterfall down Montara Mountain, lush eucalyptus forests, flowering manzanita trees, and views of the Pacific Ocean.
San Bruno Mountain Park is run jointly by the San Mateo County and California State park systems. I took my most challenging hike since giving birth at this park, and I loved it!
Today I went back to a favorite park of mine--Huddart County Park--in Woodside. I took a short and sweet 1.4 mile trail (in-and-out 0.7 miles each way).
The Pulgas Water Temple was constructed in 1934 after the completion of the aqueduct that brought water from Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite all the way to the San Francisco Bay Area. It is now part of the Crystal Springs Regional Trail, and can be accessed easily off of Cañada Road.
I've written about the Pillar Point Bluff and the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve before, but that blog post was mostly about the trails along the bluffs. We had the good luck to visit the Moss Beach marine reserve at low tide recently, and we were treated to anchovies, anemones, and harbor seals among other things!
The Sierra Club Hiker's Hut is accessible from the Heritage Grove Trailhead at Sam McDonald Park (the small parking lot near Alpine Road is a great entrance point). I have written about this park before (see here) when I went hiking with my mom. This was my first solo hike since I gave birth to my daughter, and I wanted to return to one of my old favorites!
So, a lot has happened since I posted last--I had a daughter in mid-July!
Our hike today was my first hike since she was born and her first hike ever. I wanted her first hike to be in the redwoods, so we made the short drive over to Huddart Park, a San Mateo County Park in Woodside. This 1.7-mile hike is a good hike for kids or for people who are carrying infants in a carrier. It is pretty flat, offers a nice variety of forest types, and has several benches. It's a pleasant, easy hike for extremely novice hikers! |
