San Bruno Mountain Park is run jointly by the San Mateo County and California State park systems. I took my most challenging hike since giving birth at this park, and I loved it!

The trailhead for the 3.1-mile Summit Loop can be accessed from the trailhead parking lot.

I went in a clockwise rotation through the trail, and I really recommend it: the climb up is steeper, so you get to see panoramic views of the entire Bay Area more quickly and then you have an easier descent, which is nice on the knees. At the top of the summit you can see the ocean and the bay simultaneously.

There is not a lot of shade, so definitely remember to bring a hat and wear sunscreen.
Also, this park looks like it would be really great for viewing wildflowers in the spring. I was surprised to see a few wildflowers still blooming at the summit, even at the tail end of October, so it must really be spectacular in the spring. I am looking forward to a return visit!

I recommend checking out www.mountainwatch.org.
As they say, at San Bruno Mtn. Watch they offer chances to: Explore the mountain’s history • Volunteer to restore native ecosystems • Hike the mountain, rise above the city • Buy native plants for your garden.
They are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, and the group (and its predecessors) are a large part of why there is still so much open space left on San Bruno Mountain.
Thanks -- I enjoy your website --

The San Bruno Mountain Park offers a range of hiking trails with diverse landscapes, from coastal scrub to grasslands and forests. It’s ideal for outdoor enthusiasts seeking scenic views, especially of the Bay Area. The park provides various routes for different skill levels, with an emphasis on preserving the natural habitat.
