Not this weekend, but last, I went on a really interesting 6.5-mile loop (with 1,200 ft of elevation gain!) through Las Trampas Regional Park in San Ramon. This hike offered stunning views of the entire Bay Area, wind caves, and a "box canyon" called Devil's Hole. I was surprised to see that golden poppies and sky lupine were still blooming late into October. I am glad to have done it while the skies were still clear. We are experiencing a historic wind event that is spreading wildfire in Santa Rosa and bringing smoke down to the Bay Area.

The last time I went to Morgan Territory, I was inspired by an impressive outcropping of rocks that formed a dramatic cliff face where falcons and raptors were circling and roosting. I decided to go back to Morgan Territory to do a trail that climbed up to the top rim so that I could get a birds-eye view from the cliffs. Even though it's late summer still, the colors were decidedly autumnal: golden browns, deep reds, and faded greens. It was very beautiful, but entirely different than what I saw in the spring.
My husband is a lucky duck in June because he gets to celebrate first father's day and then his birthday back to back. For his birthday this year, we went to one of our favorites: Pomponio State Beach, between San Gregorio and Pescadero.
It's been an uncharacteristically wet/cold week for May. I decided to take advantage of the lingering spring to explore more of Sycamore Grove Park in Livermore. When I explored the Valley View Loop last Tuesday, I said that I wanted to explore the area around the Arroyo Del Valle connector trail between Del Valle park and Sycamore Grove. On this hike, I did just that!
To celebrate my birthday, I decided to do a 5.5-mile hike in gorgeous Morgan Territory. It was an absolutely perfect day, and I had a blast on this trail. To see LOTS more photos and to read the details of my hike click "read more."
Chimney Rock is a popular destination in Point Reyes National Seashore. It's best to go see it in the spring, when it is covered in wildflowers; however, this easy in-and-out hike (2 miles roundtrip) is fun year round. I went on a summer day that was split between fog and sunlight. There was a dense fog rolling in, hitting closer to the historic lighthouse, while the sun was still breaking through and lighting up the white sandstone cliffs of Drakes Beach. The light made for really dramatic photos of an already dramatic landscape! To top it all off, I was treated to the sight of a few elephant seals even though it was not the season for them. I definitely want to come back to this wonderful spot!
My family and I had a great time at the far north end of Point Reyes National Seashore! Click "read more" to see maps, trail descriptions, and more photos after the jump.
Today was my last full day of getting to be with my daughter before returning to work from my maternity leave. To make the most of the day, we fulfilled an item on my bucket list: to get dessert at the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay. Before getting dessert, we walked along the public-access coastside trail, which can be accessed for free from the hotel.
This was a return visit for me to Lands End, part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Last time I was here, I walked along the Coastal Trail to the Eagles Point Overlook and back. This time, my friends and I walked past Mile Rock Overlook to Mile Rock Beach and Lands End Point and back. Then we explored the ruins of the Sutro Baths and had lunch at the Cliff House.
I've written about the Pillar Point Bluff and the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve before, but that blog post was mostly about the trails along the bluffs. We had the good luck to visit the Moss Beach marine reserve at low tide recently, and we were treated to anchovies, anemones, and harbor seals among other things!
