This hike is a repeat of the same one that my family did back in November of 2017 in the fantastic state park of Henry Cowell Redwood State Park. I was really glad to return because the trail was actually quite different for us this time! You never hike the same trail twice; there is always something different about your experience.
Obviously most people from the Bay Area and Santa Cruz are working and not touring state parks during the week, but I would have assumed that the park would be slammed all summer long with out-of-town vacationers. I was pleasantly surprised that a weekday during the summer was actually quite calm and relaxed compared to my expectations. There were people there for sure, and the whistles of the trains never stopped, but there was no film crew, or wedding photography, or any docent wearing 19th-century fashions. We saw all of that on our weekend hike in November.
My young daughter really liked this walk. Like on a similar trail at Big Basin, she really seemed to be aware of the trees. From the toddler backpack carrier that I use to hike with her, she would point to certain trees and say, "this one!" and "big tree!" It was so wonderful to see her sparking an appreciation for these wonderful trees. The next time we come to this park, I hope that we can visit the Garden of Eden. A midweek summer's day would be perfect for such a trip!
