My daughter and I recently went on a hike with a friend who was carrying her own baby in a toddler carrier hiking back pack. We actually have one that we got when my daughter was still little enough that we mostly used her Ergo carrier; when we first tried it out, she was still too little I think, and she did not like it at all. On our recent trip, she was fascinated with the back pack, so I decided to bust it out to try it again. Success! She loved it, so I decided to try a short and sweet hike at one of our favorite parks, Sunol Regional Wilderness. It was so nice not to have to restrict a hike to a paved trail.
From the Visitors Center near the Green Barn, you cross the foot bridge and then turn left along Alameda Creek. Then you turn right at the Shady Glen Trail marker (SO 2) and head up the hill. Here, you can see some nice views of the mountains that will form Flag Hill. It's briefly sunny, but then you enter into the glen that gives the trail its name. Here we saw a family of turkeys with several young ones. This part of the trail was really nice. When the trail intersects with the wide, sunny fire road of Hayfield Road, take a right and head down hill back toward Alameda Creek. There is a nice picnic table here for a shady picnic. After we ate, we brought our pack back to the car and then headed to the creek shore behind the Green Barn to play. This area is deeply shaded with alder and sycamore trees, and it is very lovely. There are lots of nice rocks to throw in the creek, and the water is shallow for a toddler to enjoy some wading.
